It’s go time in Vegas as anticipation of the “Biggest Night in Gospel Music” rises

It’s go time in Vegas as anticipation of the “Biggest Night in Gospel Music” rises

After a virtual year in 2020, a return to previous home sites of Atlanta and Nashville, the Stellar Gospel Music Awards return to the city that truly never sleeps! And, how could you with BIG events at each corner of the city? The Stellar Gospel Music Awards’ return to Las Vegas is heralded but the biggest night in gospel music isn’t the biggest event in the city. The Stellar Awards join the NBA Summer League action, Usher Raymond’s residency at Park MGM, Chris Tucker’s weekend at the Wynn Resort, the WNBA All-Star game, AAU West Coast Championships, AGT Super Stars LIVE, countless musical reviews and attractions.

Read the 2023 Stellar announcement and get nominee news, performer lineups and more on the Stellar return to Las Vegas, here

However, the biggest night in gospel music could be getting even bigger! With a return to Las Vegas, the Stellar Awards are making room for gospel music lovers from all around the world. Early indications are that Saturday’s show is nearly sold out so if you plan to be there, you should probably have already bought your ticket!

Still need tickets?

The city is excited, the gospel music industry is excited but no one is more excited than Chairman & CEO, Central City Productions, Inc. Founder & Chairman, Stellar TV Network, Mr. Don Jackson. He says of this year’s Stellar Awards, “We’re back in Vegas and we’re there because the Stellar Awards has grown and to accommodate all of these wonderful nominees, the press, the performers and their families and all of that we have more than enough room in Vegas and we’re just so delighted at how they are receiving us at the Orleans arena.”

With the lineup that we have, I feel like a kid again!

Jackson continues, “They are happy to see us coming back to the Orleans. Vegas is a wonderful atmosphere for our pre-show, our involvement with the radio partners and radio stations where we are giving awards…” On Wednesday, during the Stellar Awards Youth Symposium, Mr. Jackson and the Central City Productions were honored with a proclamation proclaiming Saturday July 15th, Stellar Gospel Music Awards Day in Las Vegas by Councilman Cedric Crear.

Youth in attendance were treated to a sit down with Pastor Mike, Jr. and a dance session with celebrity choreographer Rosero McCoy. This year’s performing and visual arts camp carries a theme of passing the torch and Mr. Jackson seems to have passed the torch to his daughter Rhonda Jackson-Simmons who is behind much of the 2023 community involvement effort. This year, Central City Productions introduced the Stellar+ Experience which features one of a kind experiences with gospel music lovers, artists, media and friends leading up to Saturday’s big show.

The Stellar+ Experience comprises highly informative and engaging events as well as new events engaging gospel music lovers, artists, their representation and working media. This year’s show is hosted by Tasha Cobbs- Leonard and Jonathan McReynolds, transformative artists whose connections to listeners extend well beyond the confines of gospel music. Top nominees this year are: Pastor Mike, Jr. (10), Tye Tribbett (9), Maverick City x Kirk Franklin (6), Tasha Cobbs-Leonard (5), Zacardi Cortez (5). Other notable artists with multiple nominations include: Travis Greene & Forward City, JJ Hairston, Maranda Curtis, Bishop S.Y. Younger feat. Sounds of the Ramp, and Brent Jones.

CeCe Winans returned like she never left. After a 10 year hiatus, everything she has since touched has turned golden, adding another tier to her already legendary status. Acknowledging her return to dominance in both gospel and Christian music, Winans will receive the Aretha Franklin Icon Award. This year’s James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award will honor Reverend Milton Biggham, Pastor of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Newark, NJ and founder of several mass choirs – The Miami Mass Choir, The Mississippi Mass Choir, the Dallas Fort Worth Mass Choir, and the Georgia Mass Choir. Songstress extraordinaire, Dottie Peoples will receive the Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones Legend Award and Dr. Bobby Jones, recognized as a global ambassador of gospel music will receive the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award for his indelible contributions to gospel music.

The Stellar Awards have if nothing else a home away from home in Las Vegas. And with community roots growing and deepening, “sin city” could soon be known in posterity as “Stellar City.” Flights are landing, the saints are hitting the strip and over on Tropicana Avenue at the Orleans Arena, gospel music lovers are preparing to rock the arena and raise the roof with praise!

The Stellar Gospel Music Awards pre-show begins Friday night at 5 PM and the 38th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards begin at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Record temps in the forecast, get your reprieve in the coolest seats in the city when the gospel music industry converges on the Orleans Arena for the 38th Stellar Gospel Music Awards. We’ll be there, stay tuned for our reports and red carpet coverage.

The Stellar Awards will premiere on the newly-launched Stellar TV network between July 24 and August 6, 2023, which can be found on Charter Spectrum, Verizon Fios and Xumo Play. Viewers may check with their local provider for availability in their area.

So, is Will Smith is a bad guy now?

So, is Will Smith is a bad guy now?

When I saw what Will Smith did and how it completely shifted the Oscars, I thought of Forrest Gump’s line, “sorry I had to fight in the middle of your Black Panther Party.” In the scene, Forrest Gump found himself in the most unlikely of places defending his toxic love interest, Jenny. I couldn’t help but think that something in Will Smith’s life came to a head on Sunday night. One the cusp of winning his first Academy Award, he did the most unthinkable thing and given the incessant news cycle and pundits available for commentary, this news cycle may last for weeks.

What if Will is finally tired of hiding his true feelings? What if Will Smith wanted to be the bad guy for once in his life? Considering the scene, precedence and potential repercussions, he couldn’t have chosen a bigger stage to turn heel. He’s been the bad guy before, just not in the court of public opinion. Forcing Janet Hubert out on the world famous sitcom? Nah, we still gave him a pass and since they’ve made up, it’s like it never happened. Sunday night was a first for Will Smith and we hope it will be his last. In professional wrestling, when one of the good guys does a bad thing or sides with the bad guys, it’s called turning from “face to heel.” Hulk Hogan did it and in the attitude era of the WWE, it was hard to tell from week to week, which side either of the stars were on.

“I’ve never seen him do that…” Amid pride, Carolyn Smith remains supportive of her son

It’s hard to not love Will Smith, but he forgot a major lesson on Sunday night: Time. Place. (Tact)ic. It was the wrong time to confront Chris Rock, the stage was the wrong place (backstage would have been preferable) and his tactic of slapping him was downright criminal. In the streets, there’s a rule that you handle disrespect when and where it happens. They weren’t in the streets though, they were in the vaunted Dolby Theatre for the biggest night in Hollywood. The assault on Chris Rock was met with incredulity and disproval from many, though it was celebrated by many more as they opined about in online. You know you’ve really messed up when you get some semblance of “The People’s Eyebrow” from Dwayne Johnson.

Thankfully, we’re nearing the end of the news cycle for the Sunday night’s Smackdown. You’re tired of hearing about it and journalists are probably tired of talking about it. Before the cycle ends, I do want to share a final thought in regard to why what happened Sunday can’t happen again. It’s not that Will Smith can’t take a joke, it’s that he couldn’t take control of himself in that moment. Will smith is king of clean and is quite hilarious so it’s safe to say that he acted out of character Sunday night. He delivered many jokes on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” with Carlton and the Banks family as the punchline so we know he can both make and take a joke.

Still, making jokes of illness and physical deformity aren’t funny even though they regularly make it into comic routines. Rap, film and mostly everything Will Smith does is easily digestible by the public but what he did to defend his wife’s honor has many heads scratching and stomachs churning. Don’t get me wrong, he got much high praise for it, but it can’t happen again.

Will Smith has since issued a formal apology online. It has been widely accepted and well received.

On the biggest night in Hollywood and perhaps the biggest night of his film career (he won his first Academy Award), he sauntered on stage and slapped Chris Rock following an off-color joke about Jada Pinkett’s hair calling her “G.I. Jane”. The joke was in bad taste but what ensued was worse. Will smith slapped Rock and continued with a verbal assault once he returned to his seat. Lupita Nyongo’s facial expressions were the consummate reaction to the out of character moment for Smith. Incredulity abounded while Rock kept rolling and returned to the script as the room and viewers collectively begged the question, “what in the world just happened?” Much unlike professional wrestling, public assaults aren’t taken lightly. Will IS a good dude and one who normally takes it on the chin when jokes are made about him, just keep his wife’s name…by now, you know the rest of that statement!

It’s the choices that make us what we are… and we can always choose to do what’s right.”
-Peter Parker, Spider Man 3

Though Chris Rock could have returned blows and showed he can back up the trash talk, he opted to continue with the night’s production in turn, outclassing America’s favorite nephew. Notwithstanding, the Will Packer produced show was flawless except for Will Smith’s emotional outburst. This leads me to my final point, tactic. Will was up for a major award which rock joked about before the hair joke aimed at Jada.

No honorable man would evade the responsibility of the defense of his wife’s honor. The juxtaposition on Sunday night was that of a man in a moment inside a bigger moment. In mere seconds he had to choose which moment was bigger and because he didn’t, his big win will forever be sullied by a momentary lapse in judgement. This moment even overshadowed another brother from Philly Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and his big moment as “Summer of Soul” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, presented by Chris Rock.

Yes, Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry were there to show grace amid a teachable moment. Yes Chris rock declined to press charges, but why jeopardize your shining moment with this darkness, Mr. Smith? IN hindsight, Sunday night will be a major teachable moment for millions of people in the days to come because a manifestation of the negative perception of our people and culture usurped the memorability of the night. To quote Will from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, “you brought this on yourself…

Sunday night’s Oscars was a win for the culture and an opportunity to prove that black excellence belongs on the same stage, deserves the same consideration and belongs in the same conversation with white productions and actors. Still, there’s always that one person you’ve got to watch out for ruining your moment and Sunday night for Will Packer, that person was Will Smith. Lessons have been learned and we’re moving forward with wisdom in tow, thanks for reading!

Recording Academy, CBS issue joint statement on postponement of GRAMMY Awards Ceremony

Recording Academy, CBS issue joint statement on postponement of GRAMMY Awards Ceremony

With an uptick in infections due to the surging Omicron variant of the Coronavirus, the Recording Academy and CBS have decided to postpone this year’s GRAMMY Awards ceremony. The GRAMMY’s aren’t the only first quarter casualty, the NFL could be looking for a new home for this year’s Super Bowl as numbers in Los Angeles continue to spike. While music and entertainment lovers await the announcement of a future date, re-visit this year’s nominees.

“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy® and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards® Show.  The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority.  Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31 simply contains too many risks.  We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night® on a future date, which will be announced soon.”
