In one of the highly publicized eligibility decisions of the 2026 Texas UIL High School Football season, Laykon Brassfield has been reinstated to varsity eligibility at Lewisville High School. This decision reversed an earlier ruling which vacated the seasons pre-district wins. Lewisville’s starting Safety Aiden Evans has helped the Farmers stay afloat with a 4-3 record handling tough district tests and rivalry matchups with ease. The UIL has been busy with eligibility decisions all season and has been embroiled in controversial decisions since before the season began. John Meredith, III was ruled ineligible after transferring from Euless Trinity to North Crowley. Though his mother as a peace officer has residency privileges, the DEC ruled that he relocated for athletic reasons. Meredith has since reclassified and is now playing his freshman season for the University of Texas Longhorns. The reversal on Brassfield’s eligibility comes on the heels of Argyle quarterback Hayes Hackney being ruled ineligible for the rest of the season.

In a press release shared with The SMG Report, the UIL said, “A student-athlete from Lewisville High School was granted an appeal for varsity eligibility. After hearing testimony from all parties, it was determined that this student did establish residence in the attendance zone.”
This year is one that is begging for a referendum on eligibility and residency. Will it happen, probably not. In the meantime, athletes and their families will have to be meticulous in their handling of their matters when relocating. The UIL Legislative Council met this week and agreed to sweeping changes in high school sports. Namely, the addition of a 35-second shot clock and the introduction of flag football as a UIL sport. We’ll have more reporting on that in the days to come.
