The city of Burleson is monitoring a forecast for winter weather expected to impact the area from Friday, Jan. 23, through Monday, Jan. 26. City officials are encouraging residents to take steps now to prepare and stay safe.
Roads
In advance of the forecasted conditions, the Public Works Department began Tier 1 brine operations on major thoroughfares and arterial streets within the city limits on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Residents are asked to keep a safe distance from brine trucks while crews are working.
Irrigation
Residents are encouraged to turn off irrigation systems. Sprinklers operating during freezing temperatures can create hazardous conditions on nearby sidewalks and roadways.
Pipes
Outdoor pipes and spigots should be covered to prevent freezing. The city also recommends dripping faucets and opening cabinet doors beneath sinks when temperatures fall below freezing to reduce the risk of burst pipes.
People
Residents are encouraged to check on elderly or otherwise vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors to ensure they are prepared for cold weather conditions.
Pets
Pets should be brought indoors during freezing temperatures to protect them from the cold.
Plants
Plants should be covered with blankets or sheets or brought indoors when possible to protect them from freezing temperatures.
Electricity
At this time, ERCOT does not anticipate issues such as rolling blackouts. However, ice accumulation on power lines could still cause localized outages. Residents can report and track outages through Oncor at stormcenter.oncor.com or United Cooperative Services at ucs.net.
Heating Safety
Residents should never use ovens or gas stovetops to heat their homes. Atmos Energy recommends keeping external vents for dryers and natural gas appliances clear and removing snow or ice from gas meters using a broom or brush only. Space heaters should be plugged directly into wall outlets, kept clear of surrounding objects and turned off before leaving a room or going to sleep.
Schools
Burleson ISD makes independent decisions regarding school delays or closures. Families should monitor district emails, text messages and social media at facebook.com/burlesonindependentschooldistrict for updates.
